Item Description:

Exterior: “found” vintage rejigged cabinets, whale is made of scrimshaw whale bone

Whale rubber stamps were replicated by the artist from 19thc whale logs, flashlight bulb (simulating a lighthouse)

 

Interior:  oakum, dried seaweed, text of early whale logs on transparent lazertran inkjet transfer paper 

[NOTE: Oakum is a preparation of tarred fibers used to seal gaps. Its traditional application was in shipbuilding for caulking or packing the joints of timbers in wooden vessels and the deck planking of iron and steel ships.[1] Oakum was also used in plumbing for sealing joints in cast iron pipe, and in log cabins for chinking. In shipbuilding it was forced into the seams using a hammer and a caulking iron, then sealed into place with hot pitch.[2] ]

Item Description:

Exterior: “found” vintage rejigged cabinet, wood deadeye, metal cut and painted miniature Cape Island vessel and sheds with copper roofs, refinished block and tackle on side of assemblage, flashlight bulb  (simulating a lighthouse)

 

Interior: coloured photos, cover image of boneless salt cod box, cod skin, cod lazertran inkjet transfer image, homemade knife (wood, metal), hook straightener made of wood and common screws, dory gunnel lamp (c. 1920s), deadeye (originally dead-man’s eye). A circular block usually of lignum vitae – a hard wood of the guaiacum tree, grown in the West Indies, though often of elm, grooved around the circumference and pierced with three holes…secures shroud to chain plate - rigging is secured to side of ship with short chains in the old days

Interior: lazartran angel images from photographs of wooden sculptures from the National Gallery of Canada the Rideau Chapel reconstructed inside the gallery in 1972 before the building was destroyed, lead codfish jigger with two hooks, original lead fish-jigger mold used to pour hot metal in to create cod hooks, transparent lazertran images of an illustration of a cod skull, black and white photograph of  fishermen (relatives) in Port Bickerton with black photo corners, no jigging for dinner refers to the 90’s when there was a strict cod moratorium

Memento Mori for Big Jim

“a wave washed him overboard, I tried to hold onto him - I couldn’t”

 

Big Jim Buchanan – was a gentle giant:  44 years old, brother husband, father, grandfather, avid woodsman, fisherman, sorely missed, January 7, 2017 onboard “Secret Sea”.  Picked up out of the cold, cold 6C degree water. He had a heart of gold, loved kids and did card tricks with them

 

Memento Mori for Big Jim from Shelburne, NS. There was no safety equipment provided for crew on the lobster boat. They turned the boat around and scooped him out of the ocean, but he was already gone.
